Pastor's Message

If you were in traditional worship during Advent, you might have heard me complain, almost ad nauseam, about our eight-year-old pre-lit Christmas tree that had several lights that weren’t working.  We finally just put a lot of decorations in those areas, so it was not so obvious.  Anyway, you “need” to know the rest of the story.  We broke down and bought a new tree last week:  50% off and then another 20%.  Not a bad deal, huh? We are already looking ahead to next year.

Now, when it comes to saving money, looking ahead can be a good thing.  However, most of the time we spend far too much time looking way down the road and fail to see what is just ahead of us.  It is good to plan, but not when it takes our attention away from today and its needs.

I have found that when I take care of today and its needs, along with some bit of careful planning, I am most likely to meet my goals.  As a follower of Christ, it is easy to concentrate so much on where I want to be five years from now that I fail to live today as a faithful disciple.  Unlike the broken pre-lit lights, I don’t want just to hide my sinful ways.  I want to fix them.

In this new year (which is quickly becoming “not so new”), I pray that we might all seek to live faithfully today and build on that faithfulness tomorrow.  As John Wesley so wisely reminded us a few hundred years ago, we are all moving toward perfection – and I might add -- one day at a time.

-- Jim
