Pastor's Message
It was my first sermon in about a month. I thought I was doing pretty well proclaiming the Good News until I noticed a few “nodders” at the 8:30 service. They were not nodding in agreement with what I was saying. Rather, they were evidently nodding in agreement with their dreams. I kept preaching, however, to those who were able to stay awake. Then, all of a sudden, the Lord came through.
For those of you who were not at the 8:30 service, this is what happened. I was talking about the difference between calling oneself a Christian and being an actual follower of Christ. I said something (and I can’t find it in my manuscript so it was, obviously, off the cuff) about Christ calling us. I had not anymore gotten it out of my mouth until someone’s cellphone rang. It was the old-fashioned phone ring that could be heard throughout the sanctuary. It could not have come at a better time, and the Lord quickly gave me the words to make it fit into my sermon. If the ring didn’t wake up folks, the laughter did. I was saved (not literally) by the bell. I have been accused of planting that, but I did not.
Once again, the Lord rescued a sermon of mine with perfect timing and the words to respond. It did not happen at 11:00. It seems that, by then, folks were awake. A similar thing happened when I was at Signal Crest. I had just said something about “a choir of angels” when the choir from the Baptist church just down the road came through on the speaker system.
Thank you, Lord, for the many ways you intervene in our lives to help us out!
-- Jim
